Suite: Based on the traditional pairing of dances in the Renaissance, the suite was the first multi-movement work for instruments. The Baroque was an extraordinarily prolific period in European art and architecture, with a great number of prodigious artists and a complex range of styles and subjects. The division into storeys was generally retained, but almost always the central part of the facade was organised with reference more to what was above and below it than to what stood on either side: in other words, it was given a vertical emphasis and thrust which was in strong contrast to the practice of horizontal division by storeys. While the Catholic church is an incredibly important factor when considering Baroque art as a whole, it was also a controversial one. Baroque art manifested in Europe during the 17th century. Throughout much of the Baroque era, however, composers only earned a living writing music if they were fortunate enough to be on the payroll of a political or religious institution. Born about the same time as opera, this vocal music was at first very similar to operas. The musical needs of that institution, therefore, dictated the music the composer produced. By the middle of the 17th century, oratorios were performed in palaces and public theaters and were growing increasingly similar to operas, although the subject matter, division into two parts rather than three acts and absence of staged action still set it apart. Among El Greco's of the following period was the representation of the miracle which was said to have occurred during the funeral of Count Orgaz, when St Augustine and St Stephen appeared and discharged the duties of the clergy, In grey and yellow, black and white, the colours of the stormy sky, El Greco has painted the miracle in an unearthly light, not as a supernatural, but rather as a supremely natural event, to which the whole Spanish people, its priests, its nobles, and its faithful, bear witness by their presence on the solid floor of the church.
