I recommend this read not only as a valuable resource but another world waiting to be visited by a lonely dreamer. Not long ago I was asked if I had read Bulfinch's versions too and to my shame had to admit that I hadn't. So this book was supposed to broaden my knowledge. I'm glad I read it. It does help to make you see literary and cultural references that we owe to certain myths, especially from Ancient Greece. Now where i enjoyed myself was when tales from the rest of the world were told. It was a harrowing crucible of war, destruction, and faith.

I highly suggest the Kindle version. Make no mistake, this is a classic that should be read by everyone and makes for some great campfire stories. It does what it set out to do and little else. Admittedly, Bulfinch was handicapped by transcribing from the various existing works on each subject, but he seems to have made every effort to make it duller, rather than bringing it to life. This means that this book has been in print for over 160 years! For anyone interested in the actual beliefs of the cultures from which these tales originated, Bulfinch will be misleading.

Bulfinch goes to a lot of effort to reference more contemporary to him writers ranging from Milton to Eliot, but it wasn't until this reread that I realized this book is meant to be a primer in literature, allusion and symbols rather than simply an overview of Greek mythology. Thomas Bulfinch came from a well-educated albeit modest merchant family why modest when the father built all the aforementioned things, I have no explanation. So why two stars, not one? I feel like I really accomplished something having read Bulfinch. It had moments, but Arthur and Company were so gosh-darn perfect beings that their stories didn't have as much charm to them. Throughout the text, Bulfinch includes examples of literary interpretations of and allusions to the various stories and points out proverbial expressions that have their origins in the mythology he relates, making this a vital reference for students of literature as well as a delightfully vibrant collection of the stories that form our cultural heritage.
