Once I started it, I pretty much couldn't put it down. He has always been fascinated by rock music and its personalities, and when his wife challenged him to write about both from the point of view of a deaf person, Five Flavors of Dumb was born. It was erected by the leaders of that communist hellhole to halt the flow of its best educated and most productive citizens to the free market economy of democratically governed West Germany. I think this is a book that celebrates diversity in a very positive, uplifting way and it well deserves to be in the final. The band members different personalities and problems with one another are believable and add a good amount of conflict to the story without being too messy or overwhelming. The relationship she has with her parents - her anger with her mother and distant, resentful father as they dote on Piper's baby sister Grace who was born deaf but because she's so young was given an expensive transplant with money taken from Piper's college trust - is a layered, complicated thing. The blurb shows only a little of the things I really liked about them. Don't worry about wanting to change; start worrying when you don't feel like changing anymore. From the looks of it, it seems like Sam is back next week, and not in the way I expected! The hardest part was writing about music because even if I've helped produced some concerts before, I still didn't know how it feels like to be in an actual band, or even to just manage one. Otherwise, there is little racial or ethnic diversity, even among minor characters. Will I remember this book in a year or two? I'm not sure if this sounds weird, but the author did not succeed in giving me this experience. I just wanted to make it to the end of the song, but I was beginning to wonder if that would ever happen.

With out-of-job father, long-hours-working mother, fully-hearing brother and deaf little sister there are a lot of problems in their household. Going into this book, I had zero expectations and pretty much thought it was just another fluffy piece about high school, music and teenage angsts. Questions in school library binding. This book will not change the world, but it will make your week. Then, smiling at each other, they attacked their instruments with renewed vigor, spewing out noise that replicated a small earthquake, while Josh gave us an unparalleled view of his tonsils.

It's interesting to see music through a deaf person. A slightly less stupid, but equally ineffective argument to which the anti-wall crowd has inevitably reverted involves the claim that a physical barrier will damage the environment and doom certain flora and fauna to extinction. When all socially accepted forms of physical contact had been exhausted, they ambled to their cars like they were reluctant to leave the school grounds. I loved that Piper is a no-nonsense shark of a manager, perfectly willing to lie to get her foot in the door. The girl who can do anything, even hear music. She has one month to bring in the cash, and it would have been easier for her if Dumb actually worked together. And how can she do it when shes deaf? Belson remained frozen to the spot, pondering his next move.
John made this story not seem like another boring coming of age story but a unique one with an amazing plot and characters with great back stories. This was a really good book. Whom music emerge way into a countless number of. I must confess I don't really like hard rock music. Can she manage a band with five wildly different musicians, nurture a budding romance, and discover her own inner rock star, though she can't hear Dumb's music? She has her reservations at first of course, but the recent emptying of her college fund drives her to try this and get some cash.

Granted, this is a friend who has moved away, which means Piper can only chat with her via computer. I'm astounded that it was written by a man. The Swimmer is of a suburban man, Neddy Merrill, who decides to return home from work by swimming eight miles through all of his neighbors' pools along the way. Already struggling at home Piper Vaughn is doing just that. Brushed off a few diversity. He came to an abrupt halt a few feet from Finn, but his enormous stomach continued to wobble. Later that year, he enlisted in the army and served with the infantry in the South Pacific until 1945.

Five Flavors is as much about a girl finding her voice and growing up as it is a tribute to Seattle - not just musically, but also with subtle odes to the city itself even down to the weather and love of coffee. She tried to look nonchalant, but was clearly confused to see me with a group of mostly popular kids, listening to music of all things. It takes you behind the scenes of the music business. I loved how Piper and Finn started to see their father as a real person and not just as their father. The spine may show signs of wear.

And boy, was this book a rich breeding ground for that love. Didnt read additional novels as she does it shell. I'm not trying to say that men can't write, they can. I was planning on waiting for the actual book to arrive but I had an ebook itch I needed to scratch and I was very easily swayed when convinced me to. Five Flavors of Dumb is such a fun read from the start all the way to the end. It definitely added a few more literary memory places to my purely-hypothetical- in-reality-though-catalogued-in-my-brain map. The Catch: How can Piper possibly manage one egomaniacal pretty boy, one talentless piece of eye candy, one crush, one silent rocker, and one angry girl? I'm not trying to say that men can't write, they can.
