Her school librarian and teachers were promoting the book so we felt it must be okay. Our middle school 7-8 graders read this with a note home that needed to be signed for violence. That was fine in the first two films, where Katniss is only slowly getting her education, but the last two films need to be about Katniss realizing how little will actually change due to her actions. Originally, there were thirteen districts in Panem. Plus, the last 20 minutes or so create this headlong rush toward whatever the next movie is going to be, a sense that the world is coming apart at the seams and real change is possible.
Peeta is resigned to the situation, as they are about to step off the train onto the platform in District 12. During his interview with , Haymitch is asked about what he thinks of the Games having 100% as many tributes; he replies by saying he doesn't see much difference as they are still going to be 100% as stupid, a display of his own wit. It is one of just 16 soundtracks to grace the top slot in the history of the Top 200 and the first since Michael Jackson's This Is It to debut at 1. Katniss learns this when she talks with Rue about District 11, and notes to the reader that the Capitol is probably not airing their conversation in order to discourage education.
He is pleased with their training scores and tells Katniss she got a high score due to her attitude. Katniss's poverty proves both useful and debilitating to her. I have to say that, talking to her, I found some parts of the book more disturbing and upsetting than she did. But I will note, that while this book is based on violence, Collins handles it carefully so not to make it too gruesome. Ask them to articulate why they want to read it. Why is it so much fun to watch the alliances and the voting off and the cattiness of these programs? A few strong clues about the appropriate age: authors usually set the age of the main character to indicate the intended audience; Katniss is 16 in the first book of the series. I was in a horrible mood. They blithely, consciously missed the entire point of the series in a way the series itself anticipated — not to mention a way that also seems like the perfect presaging of the post-ironic, post-dystopian reality we have entered since. The New Testament content of the film is also hard to miss—at least according to those who home in on the triangle of main characters. The Capitol took her stunt with the berries as an act of defiance, so she has to convince everyone that she was desperate at the thought of losing Peeta and not being rebellious, or even her family could be at risk. She does an excellent job of vividly describing children killing one another. In Katniss' eyes: Prim's face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was named… That's why my mother and Prim, with their light hair and blue eyes, always look out of place.
Then we've put them in a position to lie and be secretive, and we've lost the opportunity to discuss something important to them. After, when Haymitch tells her she did great, Peeta wonders what he means, and Katniss explains everything, including the romance strategy during the Games. The Huffington Post reported that , a supporter of Occupy Wall Street, saw the film as a social commentary on the movement. Another announcement promises that what each survivor needs the most will be provided at the Cornucopia the next morning. But Cinna's close cropped hair appears to be its natural shade of brown. Prim protests her sister taking her place, but is overruled as Gale takes hold of her, so Katniss can reach the stage to be introduced to the crowd as one of the tributes for District 12. When I get like that, anything's possible. Actually, the book is exciting; you want to turn the next page--the problem is the content.
The film's representation of the tiny, feisty, and quick-on-her-feet pre-teen was accurate to the writing and gave her that gut-wrenching smile that affected Katniss so in both versions.
