Tim Robbins, who has never been better than in this film, cracks a little smirk on his face and you completely understand all his pain, agony, and hope for the future. I think that's one of the reasons why the movie is so good. Like I mentioned in my review of , the mark of a truly great score comes with its recognizability and how it accents the frames onscreen. And director Frank Darabont wrings every bead of lifeblood from King's story, frequently elevating the material into something poetic and grand. With me, it just skipped and pretty much stopped playing, so I had to plead with the powers that be to let me finish the story of Red and Andy Dufresne.
My husband hasn't read his story yet, but I've read mine. I am willing to bet the majority of people reading this review have already seen the film version of The Shawshank Redemption. It is Red who tell the story of his friend's hope and redemption. Another reason is that the book and movie are almost exactly alike. The young prisoners always say they are innocent when they are truly guilty. He made a mistake, but that mistake was not the entirety of his existence. As the film progresses, the palette opens up appropriately, as Andy's meager triumphs—like scoring some ice cold brew for his rooftop workmates —are rewarded with rich, honey-brown hues.
