The casting was on the whole excellent though the choice of Samuel L. The Red Violin shows what the film medium can do at its very best. Despite its morally troubling spots, it presents an epic viewing experience, showing a wide range of characters, time periods, locations, and more in celebration of one of the most beautiful instruments ever created. Scenes set in Shanghai during Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution, in which Western cultural artifacts are tossed into a bonfire, also come off as cartoonish distillations of history. The film gets so many things right, from the performances and the music to the sets, costumes, and every little detail. Jackson acts at his best, his performance is unforgettable and I am sure one of his own most favourite; I can tell. That he let it go. I guess I could talk for hours about this movie, but it's better to watch it than to read about it, so I'll end my review by saying that this is a wonderful and very musical movie that doesn't deserve any less than an 8. Each segment of the tale is told beautifully with handsome settings, lavish costuming, first rate acting, and accomplished cinematography.

FILM REVIEW; That Old Fiddle Sure Got Around

the red violin review

The Red Violin is possibly the most structurally perfect film I've seen, interweaving stories set in the past and present in an intricate yet completely natural manner. For decades it sits in a Chinese pawnshop, until a mother buys it for her young daughter Xiang Pei Sylvia Chang. From the child prodigy in Vienna to the instrument expert in Montreal Samuel Jackson - this film is well cast. Finally, the Red Violin remains hidden until the present. You obviously can't dissect it, as co-writer Don McKellar¹s onscreen character thought to do, and so it remains as it was in it's original form: timeless, magical, elusive. A gift of a violin to be given to the babe becomes host to Anna's spirit.

Could have been shorter though. We also meet his extremely pregnant wife, Anna Irene Grazioli , and Cesca Anita Laurenzi , the eagle-eyed old servant who, on the eve of Anna's giving birth, insists on reading her employer's tarot cards. Anna visits a fortuneteller using Tarot cards and inquires about her future, which, unbeknownst to Anna, will be tragic — both she and her son will die during labor. It moves from time to time, from place to place, always falling into the hands of those who are, in some way, greedy. In this movie we don't follow some people, but a violin on its journey through time and the world. Since I also owned the Universal release, I was able to do a scene-to-scene comparison and even compare the bit rates of the two releases, which do have significant differences. That the knowledge and depth of responsibility started alarm bells.

However, the music is as beautiful as the plot. I listen to classical music, and the staion was praising Joshua Bell an ohio native on his perfomance of the music. Though the individual stories proceed chronologically, two separate framing devices, the Tarot readings and the ever-unfolding auction, connect them. As the bidding gets under way, the movie flashes back to late 17th-century Italy where we see the instrument being ''born'' in the workshop of Bussotti, a bullying master craftsman. There is no obligation to keep up with it.

The movie revels in cliches. The reason is the music. I felt like I was fully transported in both space and time to these places and walking among people who really belonged there. Who could think that a movie about a simple violin could turn into such magnificent beauty? I was moved and fascinated by this film. You will even get videos of Lora playing, to hear how something should sound. This is an unnecessary plot device. There are ways to learn from the privacy of your home. Finally it winds its way not so improbably, because life is weird to China, which of course echoes the modern rise of the Asian virtuosi coming from that part of the world. A truly magnificent film, The Red Violin inspired me to recollect my own past I shared with my aged upright piano; the certain spiritual vibrations I felt while playing a ragtime melody. Each of its possessors lives a life of passion and turmoil. It's fascinating to watch both the transformative and destructive power of this beauty as it's placed into the hands of a sensitive young boy, a self absorbed musical protege, and a remorseful ring leader of a totalitarian regime.

This is a perfect instrument, born from the passion of a master craftsman and the blood of his sacrifice. But when his beloved wife and the child both die during the birth, he finishes the instrument by applying red varnish, then sets it aside. One scene, in which Victoria awkwardly slavers over Frederick's half-clothed body while he plays, is unintentionally farcical. If you have any questions about the service or your purchase, please contact the service provider directly. The Red Violin will be rewarding for those who pay attention, and a pain for those who don't, because the transaction of the violin from person to person isn't smooth, whoever is not willing to pay attention should steer clear. While this guy is also a member of the Academy and has steered me to some pretty good picks in the past, I walked into the theater fearing the usual letdown that invariably follows going into a film with overly high expectations i. Whatever actual instrument Bell used, he made it sound as though the notes could have come from this violin and this violin only.

The journey begins when it first goes to a monastery, and is used by a child prodigy, who is taken to Vienna by a poor but gifted teacher. As I noted in the main body of the review, all of the characters speak in their own languages, which adds tremendously to the ambiance of the film. This surprised me at first, since the earlier Universal release had both a 5. The entire movie score is based on a simple melody sung in the beginning of the movie. First, the movie gives credence and recognition to the power of Tarot cards.
